The problem

Lengger Banyumas is a traditional Javanese dance with deep local meaning. Cultural festival branding usually falls into one of two traps: heavy traditional ornament that reads as a museum piece to younger audiences, or generic modern design that erases what makes the dance specific.

The insight

The problem isn't the tradition — it's the visual vocabulary used to represent it. Ornament says 'heritage'; it doesn't say 'alive'. Pointillism offered a way out: a technique that builds form from thousands of small marks, the same way a dance is built from thousands of small movements. Modern in execution, patient and handmade in feeling.

The solution

A complete event identity using pointillism as the core visual technique, applied across key visuals, art direction, environmental design, and social media. Rather than reproducing dance costumes literally, the visual system captures the texture and rhythm of the movement.

The outcome

A cultural festival identity that reads as contemporary without cutting itself off from the tradition it represents.

The difficult part

Pointillism is slow, and festival deadlines are not. The technique had to be applied selectively — dense in key visuals where it carries the identity, simplified in social templates where speed matters. Deciding where to spend the effort was harder than the drawing itself.

Notes

Event branding for Lengger Bicara 2025, a festival celebrating Lengger Banyumas, one of Indonesia’s traditional dances. Pointillism as the core technique — built from thousands of marks, the way a dance is built from thousands of movements.
